I did everything to please people. When I was young, I would get drugs for my mom, just so she would spend time with me. I ended up marrying the male version of her. I compromised myself; even when he was violent and cheating, I would always protect him from harm. Even after I had my son, I was bending over backward for a man to love me back. Then I realized that was all my son wanted from me. When I finally got caught, I was separated from my son for three years. I got to see him twice a year during that time. When I came home, I knew I would never choose anything over him. And that’s how our life is. He’s my number one. I got counseling, a divorce, and all my fines are paid. I just celebrated five years of sobriety. My son, at 11 years old, bought me a cake to celebrate. I work. I just bought a house. I appreciate all the tools I’ve been given. When you’re surrounded by people who believe in you, you can have this kind of positive success story.
